The circulation system pumps blood from the heart to the rest of the body. However, the body has a second circulation system know as the lymphatic system. Comprised of lymph nodes spread throughout the body, the lymphatic system is vital for transporting infection-fighting cells in a clear fluid known as lymph. It also serves an important function in the filtering and transport of waste products produced by the blood. Finally, the lymphatic system also absorbs lipids (fats) from the intestine and transports them to the blood. Any type of disruption to the lymphatic system can prevent the system from draining fluid properly, which results in swelling, causing a possible risk of infection.
The lymphatic system may be damaged or compromised in its entirety as a result of: surgery; radiation therapy (common in cancer treatments); infections; inflammatory conditions; cardiovascular diseases; and injuries, burns or other traumas. Arm sleeves and gauntlets are carefully made of a tightly woven mesh fabric that provides an extra degree of support and protection to the lymph system in your arm (most commonly affected). The continual compression supplied by the sleeves or gauntlets apply pressure on the blood vessels as well as the corresponding sections of the lymphatic system. This pressure enables the body to eliminate excess fluids and greatly reduces the swelling in your arms and hands, providing relief as well as helping to prevent the development of possible infections and skin conditions.
