In order for the blood in the legs to reach the heart, it must flow upwards against the natural downward pull of gravity. Extra pressure is, thus, needed to enable the blood to continue flowing. This pressure is supplied by the muscles that surround the blood vessels. Natural leg movements cause the muscles to vibrate. The resulting pressure produced by these vibrations constricts the blood vessels and, in essence, "squeeze" the blood upwards. If, for various reasons, the muscles fail to produce adequate pressure, the blood will be pulled downwards and begin pooling in the lowest parts of the legs. This may result in swelling, aches, and even the formation of blood clots.
Compression Stockings and compression socks supply a continual degree of graduated pressure on your legs. Graduated pressure replicates the natural pressure points of the legs. Greater amounts of pressure are required near the ankles, while gradual lesser amounts are necessary as the blood approaches the knees and thighs. Wearing Compression Stockings and Socks throughout the daytime hours can bring soothing relief from the discomforts caused by circulation irregularities, as well as provide therapeutic care, and prevent the development of serious conditions that may often develop due to improper circulation.
