Lymphedema refers to the localized swelling of the body caused by an abnormal accumulation of lymph. Tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that's usually drained through the body's lymphatic system. It most commonly affects the arms or legs, but can also occur in the chest wall, abdomen, neck and genitals.
There are several different treatment options for compression lymphedema, from surgical procedures to physical therapy. Patients may be able to control their symptoms through intermittent pneumatic compression, which uses a pump to apply pressure to the affected arm or leg. Surgery can also lead to lymphedema and may require post-surgical compression therapy. Patients can also opt to wear compression garments, which encourage lymph fluid flow out of the affected area. Treatments for compression lymphedema include a variety of home care methods, including wearing compression garments and learning how to care for them properly.
Although compression garments and physical therapy are the most common treatment options for this disease, they can only control the symptoms of the condition in its early stages. If the condition is detected early, LVA is a viable treatment option to cure it completely.
